Introduction

The Pancha Sambhu consists of five ancient and revered Shiva temples that form a spiritual protective ring or divine shield around the holy city of Puri. These five Mahadevas serve as the Dwarapalas (door keepers) and Ksetrapalas (guardians of the field) for the Dhama, protecting the sacred realm of Lord Jagannath.

Steeped in both Puranic legend and the Mahabharata, these shrines are historically and spiritually linked to the five Pandava brothers—Yudhisthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula, and Sahadeva. Local tradition holds that the Pandavas stayed in Puri for one night during their exile-in-disguise and established these Shivalingas to worship Lord Shiva. Today, these deities remain integral to the ritual life of Puri, participating in major festivals like the Chandana Yatra, where their representative images (vijaya vigrahas) accompany Lord Jagannath’s deities to the Narendra Sarovara.

Each Mahadeva is mapped to their corresponding Pandava brother as described in the Skanda Purana.

• Yameshvara: Maharaja Yudhisthira

• Lokanatha: Bhimasena
