1. Introduction
Objective 1: To understand the historical and spiritual significance of Jagannath Vallabha Math and Garden in Śrī Kṣetra Puri.

Jagannath Vallabha Math, also known as Jagannath Vallabha Garden, is one of the most sacred places in Śrī Kṣetra Puri. Located on the Bada Danda (Grand Road) between the Jagannath Temple and Gundicha Temple, and to the south of Narendra Sarovara, the garden is traditionally believed to be as ancient as the Jagannath Temple itself. It has long been maintained for growing flowers, fruits, and other offerings used in the daily worship of Lord Jagannath.

The large garden, once filled with coconut trees, flowering plants, and a cooling pond, created a peaceful atmosphere that reminded Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu of Śrī Vṛndāvana. For this reason, He frequently visited the garden with His associates during His stay in Jagannath Puri.

The Jagannath Vallabha Math, situated at the entrance of the garden, is traditionally believed to have been established by followers of the Śrī Viṣṇusvāmī Sampradāya. The garden also serves as a venue for several important festivals in which the representative (Utsava) Deities of Lord Jagannath are brought from the main temple.

2. Devotees Associated with the Place
Objective 2: To learn about the devotees closely associated with Jagannath Vallabha Math and Garden.

Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu

Jagannath Vallabha Garden was one of Mahāprabhu’s favorite places in Puri. He regularly visited the garden, performed ecstatic saṅkīrtana, and became absorbed in remembrance of Lord Kṛṣṇa’s Vṛndāvana pastimes.

Śrī Ramananda Raya

Śrī Ramananda Raya, one of Mahāprabhu’s most confidential associates, frequently met Him in this garden. Their discussions on the highest truths of devotional service and divine love are among the treasured memories connected with this place.

King Pratāparudra

During the Rath Yātrā festival, King Pratāparudra approached Mahāprabhu in the dress of a humble Vaiṣṇava while the Lord rested in the garden. As he gently massaged Mahāprabhu’s feet and recited verses from the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Mahāprabhu became pleased and embraced him, bestowing His special mercy.

3. Līlās / Pastimes Associated with the Place
Objective 3: To understand the important pastimes of Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu and Lord Jagannath at Jagannath Vallabha Garden.

● Jagannath Vallabha Garden is one of Lord Jagannath’s favorite pleasure gardens. During various festivals such as Damanaka Yātrā, Benta Yātrā, and Dugdha Melana Yātrā, His representative festival Deities are brought here for special celebrations.

● Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu frequently visited the garden and performed ecstatic saṅkīrtana with His devotees.

● During the spring season, Mahāprabhu asked His associates to sing the famous “Lalita-Lavaṅga-Latā” verses from Gīta Govinda. Absorbed in divine love, He danced throughout the garden while remembering Lord Kṛṣṇa’s Vṛndāvana pastimes.

● During one such visit, Mahāprabhu suddenly saw Lord Kṛṣṇa standing beneath an Aśoka tree. As He ran toward Him, Kṛṣṇa disappeared. Overwhelmed by separation, Mahāprabhu fell unconscious and became absorbed in the transcendental fragrance of Lord Kṛṣṇa, revealing His deep mood of Vṛndāvana-prema.

● During the annual Rath Yātrā, Mahāprabhu rested in this garden after dancing before Lord Jagannath’s chariot.

● After Lord Jagannath remained at the Gundicha Temple during Rath Yātrā, Mahāprabhu is traditionally remembered as staying at Jagannath Vallabha Garden for nine days, where He continued His association with His devotees.

● It was here that King Pratāparudra received Mahāprabhu’s mercy by reciting verses from the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and rendering humble service to Him.

4. Place / Structure / Importance
Objective 4: To understand the importance of Jagannath Vallabha Math in the service of Lord Jagannath and the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition.

Jagannath Vallabha Math is a historic monastery situated at the entrance of the sacred garden along the Bada Danda (Grand Road). The Math is traditionally believed to have been established by followers of the Śrī Viṣṇusvāmī Sampradāya.

The garden has long supplied flowers, fruits, and other offerings for the worship of Lord Jagannath. It also contains temples dedicated to Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Gopāla, Lord Jagannath, Baladeva, Subhadrā and Sudarśana, and a shrine depicting Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu with Śrī Ramananda Raya.

Jagannath Vallabha Math is especially revered because it combines the service of Lord Jagannath with the intimate devotional pastimes of Śrī Chaitanya Mahāprabhu. The peaceful surroundings inspired His remembrance of Vṛndāvana, and the garden is therefore regarded by devotees as a manifestation of Vṛndāvana within Jagannath Puri. Its close connection with Rath Yātrā, Lord Jagannath’s festivals, Śrī Ramananda Raya, and King Pratāparudra makes it one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Śrī Kṣetra.
