Objective 4: To understand the miracle of the well and its spiritual significance.
Initially, the water of the well was bitter. Upon hearing this, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu prayed to Lord Jagannātha to purify it. It is described in the Caitanya-caritāmṛta that the Lord’s mercy caused Ganges water to flow into the well, making it sweet and sanctified.
From that time onward, the water of this well was regarded as sacred as the Ganges, and devotees believed that drinking or bathing in it could grant spiritual purification and inspire pure love of Godhead.
Spiritual Significance
The well of Paramananda Purī became a symbol of divine grace and transformation within the Gauḍīya Vaiṣṇava tradition. It represents the principle that even ordinary or seemingly impure substances can become spiritually sanctified by the mercy of the Lord and His devotees.
