Objective 1: To explore the spiritual importance of the Bargi Hanuman Temple and its role as a prominent pilgrimage site in Odisha
Introduction:
The Bargi Hanuman temple (also known as the Bargi Mahavir Temple) is located on Lokanath Marg (Lokanatha Road) at Chhapan Chhak. It is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, serving as a spiritual guardian of the western entrance to Sri Jagannath Temple.
Objective 2: To describe the Historical significance of the Bargi Hanuman Temple
Historical Significance:
The “Bargi” Threat: During the medieval period, Puri was historically threatened by the “Bargis”—a mounted cavalry or raiding clan of Marathas from Maharashtra.
Formerly, Vargis would pass through this way on their horse, creating a disturbance to the temple and the people of puri.
The Bargis were devout followers of Lord Hanuman, this specific deity was placed on their route to deter them from plundering the city. So, upon seeing the sacred idol of their revered god, the invaders would show respect and refrain from violence, sparing the area.
Objective 3: To describe the presiding deity of the Bargi Hanuman Temple
Presiding Deity:
Inside the sanctum stands a magnificent, imposing 10-foot-tall idol of Lord Hanuman carved out of stone.
As a vital guardian deity of Puri, the rituals here focus heavily on protection, strength, and martial energy.
Objective 4: To portray the Architectural Significance and its religious significance
Architectural Significance:
The temple structure features a compact, square sanctum (Vimana) built primarily from sandstone and local stone blocks. It incorporates a small, flat-roofed or pyramidal front porch (Mukhashala) where devotees gather for prayers.
The Bargi Hanuman is sculpted as a fierce, monumental protector. The idol faces west, defensively greeting any travellers entering Puri via Lokanatha Road.
The external walls are minimalist but often feature basic carvings or empty niches meant to align with early Odishan temple architecture layouts.
Religious Significance – Special Recitation:
Throughout the day, local priests and visiting pilgrims chant the Hanuman Chalisa and Bajrang Baan. These are recited specifically to ward off negative energies and structural impediments.
Festivals:
Pana Sankranti (Maha Bishuba Sankranti): Celebrated as Hanuman’s birthday in Odisha, this is the grandest event at the temple. The deity is adorned with Sindoor (vermilion) and special clothing. Devotees are served Pana, a traditional sweet, cooling summer drink made of wood apple, milk, and spices.
Rama Navami: Because Hanuman is the ultimate devotee of Lord Rama, this festival sees elaborate readings of the Ramayana. The temple is beautifully decorated with flowers and marigold garlands.
Special Tuesday and Saturday Offerings: Tuesdays and Saturdays bring a massive influx of local worshippers.
