Objective 3: To understand the importance of Aarthi procedure in the Math.

Introduction
Objective 1: To identify the origin of Govardhan math.

Govardhan math or Shankaracharya math is one of the four cardinal monasteries established by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century CE. Located in Puri, it is the eastern seat (Purvamnaya Peetha) dedicated to preserving and propagating the Rig Veda and the philosophy of Advaita Vedanta.

The math has served as a beacon of Vedic learning, spiritual discipline, and Sanatana Dharma for over twelve centuries.

History and Significance
Objective 2: To know the historical and the architectural significance of the math.

Govardhan math is one of the four principal monasteries founded by Adi Shankaracharya during his mission to revive and strengthen Sanatana Dharma throughout India.

His four principal disciples were entrusted with the four cardinal monasteries:

• Padmapada — Govardhan math, Puri (East)

• Sureshvara (Vartikakara) — Sringeri Sharada math (South)

• Hastamalaka — Dwaraka Sharada math (West)

• Totakacharya — Jyotir math, Joshimath (North)

The heads of these monasteries bear the revered title Jagadguru Shankaracharya, continuing the unbroken spiritual lineage established by Adi Shankaracharya.

Govardhan Peetham exercises spiritual jurisdiction over the eastern region of the Indian subcontinent, traditionally including Odisha, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Assam, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

Architecture of the math
Govardhan math reflects the traditional Kalinga style of architecture, emphasizing simplicity, spirituality, and functionality.

The monastery features:
• Beautifully carved stone walls depicting scenes from Hindu scriptures and mythology.
• A prominent spire (Shikhara) crowned with a sacred Kalasha.
• Elegant gateways adorned with majestic lion sculptures.

The math houses sacred shrines dedicated to:
• Lord Jagannath
• Ardhanarishwara Shiva Linga, traditionally believed to have been installed by Adi Shankaracharya.

Centre of Vedic Learning
Govardhan math remains one of India’s foremost institutions for:
• Rig Vedic studies
• Sanskrit grammar
• Advaita Vedanta philosophy
• Traditional scriptural education

The continuous chanting of Vedic hymns throughout the premises creates an atmosphere of profound spiritual energy.

Samudra Arati
Objective 3: To understand the importance of Aarthi procedure in the math.

One of the unique traditions associated with Govardhan Peetham is the Samudra Arati.

Every evening, disciples of the math proceed to Swargadwar Beach, where they offer prayers and perform Deepa Arati to the Bay of Bengal.

On Paush Purnima, the Jagadguru himself leads the Samudra Arati, praying for the welfare, peace, and prosperity of all beings. This has become a cherished spiritual tradition in Puri.
