History and Overview

Vishram Ghat, located in Mathura, is among the most sacred and spiritually potent places along the banks of the River Yamuna.

The name “Vishram” means “rest”, signifying the divine rest taken by Lord Krishna after slaying the tyrant Kamsa.

It is also said that Lord Varaha, after lifting Mother Earth from the nether regions, rested at this very ghat. Here, Lord Varaha recited the Adi Varaha Purana to Goddess Earth. (Chintamani Dham).

Vishram Ghat is the main bathing ghat on the Yamuna River. Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, on His first visit to Mathura in 1515 CE, bathed at Vishram Ghat before visiting Krishna’s birthplace. (Vraj Mandala Parikrama).

This holy place is famous in the world as Viśrānti-tirtha.

Description & Ritual Importance

Vishram Ghat is where thousands of pilgrims begin and complete their Vraja Mandala Parikrama, a sacred circumambulation of the Braj region. This is also where they conclude their pilgrimage.

Devotees bathe, perform ācamana (sipping of holy water), and take vows here before starting the yatra.

The ghat is spiritually revered as Viśrānti-tīrtha, the sacred “Tirtha of Rest,” mentioned repeatedly in scriptures like the Mathura Mahatmya. “After traveling to all holy places, saintly devotees rest at Viśrānti-tīrtha.” (Mathura Mahatmya 225).
