20. Surabhi Kunda

Surabhi Kunda is a sacred water reservoir deeply revered by devotees of Sri Krishna. Steeped in spiritual energy, this Kunda (or pond) is more than a geographical feature—it is a living symbol of divine love, mercy, and bhakti (devotion).

According to the Puranic texts and Gaudiya Vaishnavite traditions, Surabhi Kunda is named after Surabhi, the divine wish-fulfilling cow of the heavenly realms. After Sri Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill to protect the residents of Vrindavan from the wrath of Indra, the king of the demigods, Surabhi appeared at this very spot to worship and thank Krishna.
Overwhelmed by Sri Krishna’s compassion and divine strength, Surabhi bathed Him with her milk here. This act of reverence is said to have transformed the spot into a sacred Kunda. Pleased by her devotion, Sri Krishna forgave Indra and accepted the worship, establishing Himself as Govinda, the true protector of Vrindavan.
This event is commemorated in the celebration of Govardhan Puja, a major festival that takes place the day after Diwali.

Surabhi Kunda is located a few kilometres from the town of Govardhan, near the Govardhan Hill, which devotees circumambulate as part of the Govardhan Parikrama. The area is relatively quiet and serene compared to the more crowded parts of Vrindavan, offering a meditative ambiance.
Location: Near Govardhan Hill, about 25 km from Vrindavan town.
Best Time to Visit: During Govardhan Puja or in the cooler months (October to March).
