23. Shiva Khora

Location and Meaning of ‘Shiva Khora’:
Objective 1: To describe the location of Shiva Khora.

Shiva Khora is a revered holy spot located at the entrance of Radha-kund village, when coming from Uddhava-kund. Shiva Khora is located on the right-hand side of the parikrama path at the entrance to the village.

Objective 2: To identify the role of Rameshwara Mahadeva in relation to Radha-Kunda.

On the right bank of the adjoining pushkariṇī (lake) connected to Radha-Kunda stands the shrine of Rameshwara Mahadev, a revered form of Lord Shiva. He is honored as the guardian of the northern direction of Radha-kund, and devotees traditionally offer their respects here before entering the sacred pond, in a spirit of reverence and purity.

Objective 3: To know the meaning of the name Shiva Khora.

The word ‘Khora’ means a holy place, and the word ‘Shiva’ can also mean a ‘jackal’.

Pastime associated with Shiva Khora:
Objective 4: To learn about the pastime connected with Shiva Khora as described in Padma Purana.

According to the Padma Purana, some local children had trapped a female jackal in a hole near this place, and out of fear, the jackal began to wail piteously. Hearing the crying of the jackal, Radharani sent Her girlfriends to rescue it, saying that at Radha-kunda no creature should suffer in any way.

The sakhis brought the frightened jackal to Radharani, and She blessed it to become one of Her maidservants in a future life. This act demonstrates Radharani’s boundless mercy and care for all living beings, even the smallest and most helpless.

Spiritual Gateway: Shiva Khora serves as a sacred threshold, preparing the mind of the pilgrim for entry into Radha-kunda’s devotional realm.
