Study Guide for BG 9.8 Purport

Aim

To explain how the material world is produced from the Lord’s inferior energy at creation, how Viṣṇu manifests at successive levels (Mahā-Viṣṇu → Garbhodaka-śāyī → Kṣīrodaka-śāyī) entering into every universe and atom, and how living entities and species are immediately created and arranged by the Lord’s will according to past desires—after which the Lord remains detached.

Purport

This material world is the manifestation of the inferior energy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This has already been explained several times. At the creation, the material energy is let loose as the mahat-tattva, into which the Lord as His first puruṣa incarnation, Mahā-viṣṇu, enters. He lies within the Causal Ocean and breathes out innumerable universes, and into each universe the Lord again enters as Garbhodaka-śāyī Viṣṇu. Each universe is in that way created. He still further manifests Himself as Kṣīrodaka-śāyī Viṣṇu, and that Viṣṇu enters into everything – even into the minute atom. This fact is explained here. He enters into everything.

Now, as far as the living entities are concerned, they are impregnated into this material nature, and as a result of their past deeds they take different positions. Thus the activities of this material world begin. The activities of the different species of living beings are begun from the very moment of the creation. It is not that all is evolved. The different species of life are created immediately along with the universe. Men, animals, beasts, birds – everything is simultaneously created, because whatever desires the living entities had at the last annihilation are again manifested. It is clearly indicated here by the word avaśam that the living entities have nothing to do with this process. The state of being in their past life in the past creation is simply manifested again, and all this is done simply by His will. This is the inconceivable potency of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. And after creating different species of life, He has no connection with them. The creation takes place to accommodate the inclinations of the various living entities, and so the Lord does not become involved with it.

Objectives

By the end of the lesson students should be able:

  1. To state that the material world is a manifestation of the Supreme’s inferior energy.
  2. To explain that at creation the material energy is released as the mahat-tattva.
  3. To describe the entry of the Lord as Mahā-viṣṇu into the mahat-tattva.
  4. To explain Mahā-viṣṇu’s position in the Causal Ocean and his breathing out innumerable universes.
  5. To state that into each universe the Lord enters as Garbhodaka-śāyī Viṣṇu.
  6. To describe the further manifestation as Kṣīrodaka-śāyī Viṣṇu and that this Viṣṇu enters into everything, even the atom.
  7. To affirm the purport’s statement: “He enters into everything.”
  8. To explain how living entities are impregnated into material nature and take positions according to past deeds.
  9. To show that activities of the material world begin immediately at creation.
  10. To explain that different species are created simultaneously with the universe (not evolved later).
  11. To relate the simultaneous creation of men, animals, birds, etc., to desires the living entities had at the last annihilation.
  12. To interpret the word avaśam as indicating living entities have no causal role in this process.
  13. To explain that past-life states are simply manifested again by the Lord’s will.
  14. To appreciate that this demonstrates the inconceivable potency of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
  15. To explain that after creating the various species the Lord remains without connection or involvement in their activities.
  16. To conclude that creation is arranged to accommodate the inclinations of living entities while the Lord Himself stays detached.
Answers to Objectives
  1. Material world = inferior energy: The world is produced from the Lord’s inferior energy (prakṛti) — it is a created manifestation, not identical with the Supreme.
  2. Mahat-tattva released: At creation the subtle material principle (mahat-tattva) is projected outward as the seed of material nature.

  3. Mahā-Viṣṇu enters mahat: The Lord’s first puruṣa expansion, Mahā-Viṣṇu, enters this mahat to initiate the cosmic manifestation.

  4. Mahā-Viṣṇu in Causal Ocean: Mahā-Viṣṇu rests in the Causal Ocean and breathes out innumerable universes from his pores.

  5. Garbhodaka-śāyī Viṣṇu: Into each universe thus formed the Lord manifests again as Garbhodaka-śāyī Viṣṇu, who establishes that universe.

  6. Kṣīrodaka-śāyī Viṣṇu pervades all: Further manifestation as Kṣīrodaka-śāyī Viṣṇu penetrates every element of the universe, down to the atomic level.

  7. “He enters into everything”: The purport stresses that the Lord pervades all levels of manifestation — He is immanent throughout creation.

  8. Living entities impregnated into nature: Individual souls are placed into the material nature; their positions at creation depend on their past karma and desires.

  9. Activities begin at creation: The various activities of the material world commence immediately as the universe comes into being.

  10. Species created simultaneously: Different species (human, animal, bird, etc.) are produced at the moment of creation rather than evolving gradually.

  11. Desires manifest at new creation: Whatever desires souls had at the prior annihilation re-appear, determining their present forms and proclivities.

  12. Meaning of avaśam: The term indicates compulsion or inevitability — the living entities do not themselves cause this process.

  13. Past states re-manifested by His will: The soul’s former condition is again externally realized, enacted by divine arrangement, not by soul’s independent power.

  14. Inconceivable potency: That the Lord can instantaneously manifest innumerable species and arrange their positions demonstrates His inconceivable potency.

  15. Lord’s non-involvement after creation: After arranging species to suit living entities’ inclinations, the Lord remains detached—He does not become entangled in their karmic activities.

  16. Creation accommodates living inclinations: The cosmic arrangement serves the desires of embodied souls, confirming that creation is purposive yet does not bind the Lord.

Key points / Takeaway

  • The material world issues from the Lord’s inferior energy (prakṛti).
  • Creation begins when mahat-tattva is released and Mahā-Viṣṇu enters it.
  • Mahā-Viṣṇu breathes out innumerable universes from the Causal Ocean.
  • In each universe the Lord is present as Garbhodaka-śāyī and further as Kṣīrodaka-śāyī Viṣṇu, who pervades everything down to the atom.
  • Living entities are placed into material nature and assume positions according to past desires and deeds.
  • Species and their activities arise at the moment of creation — not by later evolution.
  • The term avaśam indicates living entities play no causal role; their past states are simply re-manifested.
  • All of this occurs solely by the Lord’s will — revealing His inconceivable potency.
  • After arranging creation to fit living entities’ inclinations, the Lord remains detached and uninvolved in their individual doings.
  • The cosmological scheme serves to manifest and accommodate conditioned souls while leaving the Supreme transcendental.
